MRES Clubs The following is a list of clubs offered this school. Over the next couple of weeks, each club will be sending home an application form for any student interested in joining. Thank you for your support of our MRES clubs!
Garden Club 1st – 4th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Ahmed, Mrs. Anderson, Ms. Haymond, Mrs. Kingston Meetings: Monday (Weekly) **In Garden Club we will have a great time learning about gardening through many fun activities. We will learn how a seed becomes a plant, do some planting, harvesting, farm-totable activities, take care of birds in the garden and more!
Science Olympiad 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Curtis, and Mrs. Burton Meetings: Monday (Weekly) 2:30-3:30 (Starting September 26th) **Science Olympiad is team competition involving academics in which students compete in events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. **Strong participation from both students and parent volunteers throughout the season is essential to a productive season. This year our school will have one team, consisting of up to 20 dedicated students in grades 3-5, who will practice at home and afterschool to be the very best in their events. We can ONLY have 8 fifth graders on the team per state rules. The county competition will be at River Ridge Highschool in March on a Saturday.
Technology Club 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Jurnack and Mrs. Mitchell Meetings: 2nd and 4th Wednesday starting September 14 ending December 14. **We will hold tryouts Sept. 14th and 28th. Students should come prepared to the second day of tryouts ready to present their idea. Categories will be provided at the first meeting. **Technology club requires students to have access to the technology they are using at home. We cannot provide it. Students will create a technology project from one of the categories. They will present their projects at the Piedmont Regional Technology Fair in February.
Cougar Chorus 4th and 5th Grade Sponsor: Mrs. Whitley Meetings: Wednesday 2:30-3:30 (Weekly - September – May) ** Chorus students will practice singing techniques and songs for performances such as Veterans Day, Winter Holidays, and a Spring Musical. Students enrolled in the Cougar Chorus also have the opportunity to audition for the Cherokee County Elementary Honor Chorus.
Math Club 4th and 5th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Crump and Mrs. Covington Meetings: Thursday (Biweekly) 2:30-3:30 August 25th, September 8th and 29th, October 13th and 27th, November 10th and 31st , December 1st, Competition is on December 3rd **This is our second ever Math Club. We are so excited to have your student to be a part of it. Math Club is a fun time to explore math topics that are beyond what you hear about in your classroom – topics like fractals, strategy games, or hands-on activities that explore pattern or space relationships, and up to 6th grade level math skills. We will be displaying our math skills at a District math competition on December 3rd at Liberty Elementary School. We will be selecting students based on assessments and teacher recommendations!
Academic Bowl 4th and 5th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Perez and Ms. Sawdy Meetings: Thursday (Weekly) 2:30-3:30 **Our academic bowl club is a fun and exciting way to show how smart you are! The competition is usually held in April. All students interested please come talk to me, so I can add you to my list. My classroom is located in the third grade hallway.
Reading Bowl 4th and 5th Grade Sponsors: Ms. Butera and Mrs. Hobbs Meetings: Monday (Weekly) 2:30-3:30 August 29th, September 12th, and 26th, October 24th, November 7th and 28th, December 12th, January 9th, 23rd, and 26th **The MRES Reading Bowl Team goal is to promote the pleasure of reading and help students improve reading comprehension. This year’s tournament is scheduled for Saturday, January 28th, 2023.
Student Council 4th and 5th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Gillum, Ms. Hill, and Mrs. Curtis Meetings: 2nd Thursday (monthly) **Student Council is an organization conducted by students and supervised adults. The purpose of student council is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership by organizing and carrying out school activities and service projects.
Cougar Cares 4th and 5th Grade Sponsors: Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Bennett, Ms. Mick Meetings: During School **We have exceptional students at Mountain Road, students with different academic, social, and emotional needs. Having a friend to help engage and participate in social activities or review an academic skill can make all the difference in one’s school experience! Cougar Cares Club fosters relationships between all types of students by allowing students to be a peer helper to the other students
